Historically, Durango attracted huge interest from the Spanish because of rich gold, silver and iron ore deposits. Today, the state continues to be important for having about 25% of the country’s forest, making Durango one of the richest states in Mexico in terms of natural resources. Apart from being a major manufacturer, Durango has made its mark in the movie business, serving as the location for over 50 national and 60 foreign films.
