The Nouveau, Off-beat, Kinda Cool Places

What distinguishes these restaurants from the previous genres is that they are a little more trendy and offbeat. Insurgentes Sur offers El Candelero (5598-9008/9677) The settings are baroque (in a Parisian brothel kind of way), but very Mexican in its naiveté (from the Porfirio Diaz Francophile period).

Casa Lamm RestaurantWhen they decided at the Casa Lamm (5514-8501 to 4) to expand their cafe into a fully fledged bar/restaurant, the dilemma was how not to clash with the beautiful 19th century architecture that makes this arts center such a popular tourist spot. The end result was astonishing. The cafe has moved to the ground floor and has become a resplendent semi-outdoor dining hall. Huge retractable glass windows, sofa chairs, cabin-style bathrooms and exquisite cutlery (and of course the cuisine) make for a fantastic spot to take your partner. Go at night to cool off from the lingering heat wave. Alvaro Obregon 99, (at the corner with Orizaba), Colonia Roma.

Asia de Cuba (5211-6569) - Very, very chic would be an apt way to describe this glass palace. With it's partner sites in New York and London, this restaurant not only serves up some exquisite gourmet cuisine, but its conceptual design - all the walls are pure glass - and delightful terrace (full of exotic plants) make for a unique dining experience.

For years the south of México City has lagged when it comes to good restaurants. Now there are plenty of choices, including Alaia (5616-6336), La Taberna de Leon (5616-2110).
